What should I do if I cannot file my return on time?

File an extension using IRS Form 4868. You can file the form either online, over the phone, or through standard mail. However, it must be filed with the IRS before the tax deadline.

Remember that just because you filed for an extension to file your return does not give you an extension to pay the IRS. If you are likely to owe money the IRS you should also send a payment in to the IRS. To avoid additional fees and penalties you must pay the IRS at least 90% of what you will owe them.
